Mei Li, a beautiful and highly educated Hui Chinese from Yunnan, is robbed of her job and qualifications as a doctor after falling foul of her disloyal husband and his spiteful and ambitious mother. In the chain of events that follows she finds herself forcibly used by the Chinese state to slake the sexual thirsts of depraved foreign guests. Merely for resisting her tormentors, she is thrown into prison without trial for six months.
What follows is a journey of pain, adventure and betrayal, but ultimately ending in finding true love and redemption.
This is Mei Li's story, complete and unexpurgated in all its thrilling and chilling detail and authenticity. It provides and eyewitness view of modern China and Japan we never see including a rare and utterly convincing look inside the dark world of organised crime syndicates.
Most importantly, it provides a cogent account of the twenty-first century prostitution that officially does not exist in Japan. Controlled by Yakuza, the clandestine trade in what the author calls "firm young flesh from the poorest countries of Asia" echoes the infamous phenomenon of 'comfort women' perpetrated by the Japanese during World War 11.
The Other Side of the Coin also provides many insights into Asia life and culture, based on the author's more than 40 years living and working in Japan, China and Mongolia.

The Other Side of the Coin eBook Michael Gorman Zhang Li Reviews
I have just discovered this author and this book and believe me, you can't miss this! Where has he been until now??
Michael Gorman's credentials as a Grand Master of the genre are impeccably confirmed with every page - and I couldn't stop turning them. As you might expect from the polymath that he is, Gorman gives us so much more than a mere novel. This is a tour de force of cross-cultural references, embedded in a fast moving plot that tears at the emotions and constantly astonishes with jaw-dropping and authentic insights into a very dark side of life in the Far East. The sex is perfectly judged and entirely relevant to the narrative - no "Fifty Shades" namby-pamby here.
I had to keep reminding myself that this was a work of fiction, and indeed it is difficult to avoid the conclusion that there are shards of autobiography lurking somewhere in the background of this fascinating and easy read. Right from the beginning Gorman convinces us that he really is Lord Fitzurban and this really is his wife's story of brutal sexual depravity suffered at the hands of the Chinese government and her progression into Yakuza-controlled prostitution in Japan. The detail and colour he brings gives you that hairs-on-the-back-of-the-neck feeling that you are actually there - and I often wished I was.
Anyone with any experience of China or Japan will easily relate to Gorman's narrative; and readers who have no such experience will be left yearning for more. Don't take my word for it - read it for yourself and see! When's his next book coming out?
This book offered an interesting insight into the depravity of the Chinese government and a side of Japanese society that we wouldn't normally think about.
